Information
Many children went to the goldfields with their parents and by December 1852 there were almost 12000 children on the Victorian diggings. Most of them spent their childhood helping their parents search for gold. They carried wood, looked after the tent or hut and cared for the horses.
Older children were expected to work as hard as the adults on the diggings. Some children attended school, however the standard of education was not very high. Teachers had almost no equipment and if the pupils moved, the teacher too had to pack up and move to a new place.
In December 1852 there were almost 12000 children on the Victorian Gold fields. Most children learnt at a very young age to pan or dish for Gold.
For Children on the gold fields, life was at points a great adventure and other times very difficult and harsh.
